The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) is a network of American communications satellites (each called a tracking and data relay satellite, TDRS) and ground stations used by NASA for space communications.

The system was designed to replace an existing network of ground stations that had supported all of NASA's manned flight missions. The current TDRS configuration consists of nine geosynchronous satellites distributed to provide near continuous information relay service to miksa.xyz by: 1.

A tracking and data relay satellite (TDRS) is a type of communications satellite that forms part of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) used by NASA and other United States government agencies for communications to and from independent "User Platforms" such as satellites, balloons, aircraft, the International Space Station, and remote bases like the Amundsen-Scott South Pole.

The concept behind the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) was born out of NASA's effort to rely less on international ground stations and create long-duration and. the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS).

• The TDRSS provided low-Earth orbital mission support and reduced NASA’s need for an extensive network of ground stations. CHAPTER FOUR TRACKING AND DATA ACQUISITION/ SPACE OPERATIONS **DB. Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System. NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), also known as the Space Network, provides tracking, data, voice, and video services to the International Space services for the entire TDRSS network.

The ground system also provides telecommunication services between low-Earth orbiting spacecraft and user control. Jul 15,  · TDRSS is a communication signal relay system which provides tracking and data aquisition services between low-earth orbiting spacecraft and control and/or data processing facilities.

The system is capable of transmitting to and receiving data from spacecraft over at least 85% of the spacecraft's orbit.

TDRSS can maintain near continuous con-tact with lower orbiting satellites, replacing the many ground stations which used to be required to maintain minimal contact with the Space Shuttle and other Earth orbiting satellites. The outstanding success of TDRSS in TDRS_fs_ Created Date.

The intent of this volume is to present a history of NASA's "other" network, the one established and run by the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network, or STDN, was—in its various incarnations throughout the years—the network /5(2).
